Welcome back to Naava’s Nourishing Garden! Today, I’m sharing a personal story along with a simple, natural recipe for making your own spray air freshener with alcohol or liquor as a base. If you’re like me, you’ve probably been asked, “Why don’t you just buy air freshener?” My husband asked me the very same question recently. His curiosity led to a fun, spontaneous moment that I’ll never forget—and it’s a great reason to embrace natural alternatives.

A Personal Story: Why I Don’t Buy Air Freshener

The other day, my husband walked into the living room and asked, “Why don’t you just buy air freshener like everyone else?” I could tell he was genuinely curious, so instead of explaining, I grabbed the homemade spray I keep on hand and gave it a quick spritz around the room.

He took a deep breath, blinked a couple of times, and then said… nothing. Completely speechless! I had to laugh because I could see on his face that he loved it. Turns out, he wasn’t expecting something so simple and natural to smell that good. And that’s one of the reasons I love making my own—no harsh chemicals, just pure, fresh scents.

Why Make Your Own Air Freshener?

If you’re concerned about indoor air quality, or if you want to avoid synthetic chemicals often found in store-bought air fresheners, this DIY recipe is perfect. It allows you to freshen up your space naturally while controlling exactly what goes into the spray.

The Power of Alcohol in Air Fresheners

Alcohol is a key ingredient for several reasons:

Preservative: It helps extend the shelf life of your homemade spray, so it stays fresh longer.

Fragrance Carrier: Alcohol dissolves essential oils and helps them mix well with water, ensuring an even scent distribution when sprayed.

DIY Natural Air Freshener Recipe

Here’s how you can make your own air freshener at home—no need to buy synthetic sprays ever again!

Ingredients:

1 cup of distilled water: Pure and clean, it dilutes the alcohol and essential oils.

2 tablespoons of vodka (Everclear is a personal favorite) or rubbing alcohol: This helps blend the oils and acts as a preservative.

15-20 drops of essential oils: Choose based on your favorite scents or desired mood.

Optional: Fresh herbs or citrus slices: These can add a natural fragrance and look lovely in the bottle.

Instructions:

1. Mix the alcohol and essential oils: In a spray bottle, combine your vodka (or rubbing alcohol) with your chosen essential oils. This will ensure the oils dissolve properly.

2. Add the water: Pour in the distilled water, and give the bottle a good shake to combine.

3. Optional ingredients: Feel free to add a few sprigs of fresh herbs or slices of citrus to enhance the scent and add a decorative touch.

4. Shake before each use: Since essential oils can separate over time, make sure to shake the bottle before each spray.

Choosing Essential Oils for Your Air Freshener

The essential oils you select can completely transform the vibe of your space. Here are some popular choices:

Lavender: Perfect for bedrooms, it promotes relaxation and calm.

Citrus oils (like lemon or orange): These are great for brightening up kitchens and bathrooms.

Peppermint: Energizing and uplifting, it works well in home offices or living rooms.

Rosemary or Eucalyptus: Ideal for creating a clean, invigorating atmosphere.

Cedarwood or Pine: Earthy and grounding—brings the essence of nature indoors.

Feel free to mix and match essential oils to create your own signature scent!

Tips for Using Your Natural Air Freshener

Test first: Before spraying on fabrics or surfaces, test a small area to make sure there’s no staining or unwanted reactions.

Spritz in the air: For an instant room refresher, spray your air freshener into the center of the room, allowing the scent to naturally disperse.

Use in small spaces: Spray inside closets, drawers, or your car for a quick freshen-up
